A teacher accused of having sex with a female student he was supposed to drive home to another state had the girl's mother's permission for the trip, school officials said.
School officials said they fired the 30-year-old man soon after learning of the accusations involving the 16-year-old student.
"(He) was a part-time drum instructor," said the school's spokeswoman. "Allegations came to the school's attention on May 1. The school determined that (he) had engaged in inappropriate conduct, and he was dismissed immediately."
The spokeswoman said the school wants the staff to be involved with the students but requires approvals before any employee can take a child off campus.
The man, who worked at the school for a year and a half, was supposed to be taking the girl home for spring break, officials said.
"Anybody who takes one of our students from the [school] has to go through a set of approvals, which include the houseparent and the home-life administrator," said the spokeswoman. "In this case, permission was granted from the child's parent."
Teachers also have state-required background checks, she said.
Police charged the man with the felonies of third-degree rape and third-degree criminal and the misdemeanor of endangering the welfare of a child, according to court records.
After he was arraigned, he was released on $2,500 bail, according to court records.
He is the second teacher at the school to be accused of having sex with a student in the last 15 months.
Last year, police accused a female teacher of having sex with a 17-year-old student at the school and at her home an unspecified number of times, according to court records.
Prosecutors dropped the most serious charge of interfering with the custody of a minor. She pleaded no contest to a corruption of minors charge and was sentenced to 2 years' probation. |
