Home leader accused of rape

August 25, 2007

Adapted from the York Daily Record

A wife, suspicious over a comment made about a vibrating chair, discovered her husband was raping a mentally handicapped woman under their care at their group home, police documents state.

The wife overheard her husband tell the victim that she would become sexually aroused by the vibrations of the chair, according to court records.

She questioned the 36-year-old woman, who is mentally retarded, about the comment and learned of the sexual assault, police said.

Police arrested the 56-year-old man and he remained in county prison, awaiting extradition. Police charged him with rape, rape by threat of compulsion and simple assault.

The wife had become suspicious when her husband kept pushing the button on a vibrating chair in the family room where the victim was sitting. When she told her husband to stop, the man and the victim went into the kitchen, where the wife overheard the sexually suggestive comment, police said.

When questioned, the victim cried and told the wife that the man had raped her that morning.

The wife told police that she confronted her husband and that he admitted to the sexual contact.

The couple is licensed to operate a group home for people with mental health issues and mental retardation. The victim was placed in the home about four years ago. She has now been placed in another home, police said.

Police allege that at 4 a.m. one morning, the man woke the victim, who was sleeping in her bedroom, and raped her. She told him to stop and tried to pull the blankets over her to stop the attack, police reported. She also noticed the night light and the hallway light, which were always on, were not lit, according to police.

The man told her that if she told anyone, he would kick her out of the home, police said.

Police also allege that three days before the rape, the man followed the victim into the garage and kissed her. She told him to stop, but he continued to kiss her and followed her around the house all day, police said.
