| Woody Allen, director/actor-After a 12-year
relationship with actress Mia Farrow, they separated in 1992 after
Farrow found nude photographs Allen had taken of her adopted daughter,
Soon-Yi Previn, 22. Farrow says Allen admitted to a relationship
with Soon-Yi. After Allen and Farrow separated, a public battle
for the custody of their three children began. During the proceedings,
Farrow alleged that Allen had sexually molested another daughter,
who was then seven years old. The judge eventually concluded that
the sex abuse charges were inconclusive, but called Allen's conduct
with Soon-Yi "inappropriate." The case never went to trial
and Allen was never indicted.
In a 2005 Vanity Fair interview, Allen said that Farrow's
discovery of the nude photographs was "just one of the fortuitous
events, one of the great pieces of luck in my life. [...] It was
a turning point for the better."
Akon, r & b singer-In 2007, Akon drew criticism
for a simulated rape with a fourteen-year-old girl onstage at a
club. The incident was filmed by his crew and later uploaded to
the Internet. In a song, "Sorry, Blame It On Me," Akon
apologized to the young girl, although he criticized the club for
admitting her because she was under 21. The song's lyrics include
the lines, "Even though the blame's on you, I'll take that
blame from you. You can put the blame on me."
Kobe Bryant, professional basketball player-In
2003, a woman accused Bryant of raping her in his hotel room. The
rape investigation was "resolved" when Kobe agreed to
apologize to the victim for the incident. He made this public statement:
"Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual,
I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident
the same way I did." Details of financial compensation to the
victim were not made public.
Bill Cosby, comedian/actor-In 2006, the media reported
that Cosby had settled a lawsuit with a woman alleging he had sexually
assaulted her. The woman claimed that Cosby assaulted her at house
in early 2004 after giving her some blue pills. The woman said the
pills had rendered her semiconscious, and that the comedian molested
her. She said she awoke to find her bra undone and her clothes in
disarray. Around the same time, reports of 12 women saying they
also were sexually assaulted by Cosby surfaced, but none of the
complainants proceeded with charges.
Gary Glitter, English rock/pop singer-In 1999,
he was convicted for downloading 4,000 pictures of child pornography
in the United Kingdom and was later listed as a sex offender. In
2002, he was permanently evicted from Cambodia for suspected child
sexual abuse offenses. He then moved to Vietnam where he was arrested
by authorities while trying to leave the country. Glitter was tried
and convicted of child sexual abuse charges in 2005-06. His release
date is August 2008.
Michael Jackson, musician/entertainer-After it
was revealed that children frequently slept in his bed, Jackson
was accused of child sexual abuse in 1993. His relationship with
children was brought into the spotlight again in 2003 when the TV
documentary Living with Michael Jackson aired. This resulted
in Jackson being tried and later acquitted of more child molestation
allegations and several other charges in 2005.
R. Kelly, rapper/singer-Top-selling R&B artist
R. Kelly has faced many charges for incidents involving young girls.
In 1994, 25-year-old Kelly married singer Aaliyah, age 15. Since
the couple did not have her parents' consent; the marriage was annulled
five months later.
In December 1996, a woman sued Kelly because he encouraged her to
have sex with him when she was a minor and to participate in group
sex with underage girls. Kelly settled the lawsuit for $250,000.
In 2000, a teen rapper sued Kelly over their alleged sexual relationship
while she was a minor. Two years later, Kelly settled the lawsuit.
At the same time, another woman accused him of coercing her into
a sexual relationship when she was 16 years old.
In 2002, Kelly settled with a fourth woman before she filed a lawsuit.
However, a fifth woman sued Kelly for secretly videotaping her sexual
encounter with him.
In June 2002, a grand jury indicted Kelly on 21 counts of child
pornography as a result of a videotape that showed him having sex
with a 14-year-old girl.
In January 2003, Kelly faced twelve child pornography charges after
police found pictures of a nude, underage girl. Some pictures showed
Kelly having sex with her. The charges were dropped two months later
when a judge ruled that detectives seized the pictures illegally.
Martin Lawrence, actor/comedian-In 1997, his "Martin"
sitcom co-star Tisha Campbell sued for sexual harassment. Campbell
said Lawrence sexually harassed her to the point that she feared
for her safety. The studio negotiated a settlement that allowed
her to complete the show's final season without being on the soundstage
with Lawrence.
Jerry Lee Lewis, rock'n'roller-In 1958 at the age
of 23, he got married for the third time-to his second cousin twice
removed who happened to be 13. The scandal caused him to all but
vanish from the music scene, but he never faced any charges.
Jose Mesa, professional baseball player-He was
arrested on sex abuse charges of two women in 1996. Mesa was acquitted
of rape, gross sexual imposition and theft. He continues to pitch
for the Philadelphia Phillies today.
Bob Packwood, former Oregon senator-At least 29
women accused Packwood of sexual assault and abuse. With pressure
mounting against him, he finally announced his resignation from
the Senate in 1995 after the Senate Ethics Committee unanimously
recommended that he be expelled from the Senate for ethical misconduct.
Roman Polanski, Academy Award-winning director-Polanski
went to France after an incident in the United States with a 13-year-old
girl in 1978. He was initially charged with rape by use of drugs,
perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under 14,
and furnishing a controlled substance to a minor. Through a plea
bargain, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of engaging in unlawful
sexual intercourse with a minor. He has never returned to the U.S.
to face arrest.
KirbyPuckett, professional baseball player-He was
arrested and charged with groping a woman in a bar restroom in 2002.
He was tried and acquitted.
Paul Reubens aka Pee-Wee Herman, comedian/actor-In
1991, he was arrested for masturbating publicly in an adult theater.
In exchange for a fine and some public service announcements, he
was given a clean record.
He was arrested again in 2002 in connection with an investigation
involving child pornography. Child porn charges against him were
dropped two years later after he pleaded guilty to a "misdemeanor
obscenity" charge.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, actor/Governor of California-In
2003, an article from a 1977 issue of "Oui" magazine resurfaced
in which Schwarzenegger described taking turns having sex with a
woman at Gold's Gym in Venice Beach with other bodybuilders. He
said he later had made up those stories.
A 2001 article in "Premiere" magazine described many instances
in which Schwarzenegger groped an interviewer, pulled the breasts
of a woman on the "Terminator 2" set, and made insinuating
sexual references to women.
William Kennedy Smith, doctor/JFK's nephew--In
1991, Smith was tried and acquitted on a rape charge of a 29-year-old
woman he met at a Palm Beach, Florida, bar. She alleged that Smith
raped her, but he testified that the sex was consensual. At a criminal
trial later that year, Smith was acquitted of all charges against
him. The trial attracted extensive media coverage because of the
prominence of the Kennedy family.
In 2004, a former employee said that Smith had sexually assaulted
her in 1999, and brought a civil action against him. In 2005, the
court dismissed the lawsuit.
In the same time period, it was reported that a woman was paid a
large sum of money by Smith in an out-of-court settlement. This
woman charged that Smith "often improperly touched her"
and "gave unwanted massages."
Clarence Thomas, Supreme Court justice-During his
1991 confirmation hearings to become a Supreme Court Justice, a
Judiciary committee FBI report was leaked. The report showed that
his former colleague, University of Oklahoma law school professor
Anita Hill, had accused him of sexually harassing her when the two
had worked together. Citing a lack of evidence, the Senate confirmed
his appointment to the Supreme Court.
Mike Tyson, professional boxer-In 1992, this world
heavyweight boxer was convicted of raping an 18-year-old woman.
He served three years of his six-year sentence. During a 2003 interview,
he maintained his innocence, but said about the woman, "I just
hate her guts… . Now I really do want to rape her and her
(expletive) mama."
